The week ahead.

Thursday am 1ft SW line.

Thursday am 1ft SW line.

Thursday 8am WFL Surf Report and Forecast 6/12/14 8am: There is a trough over Georgia which is pulling some SW winds in the 10-15knt range. Short period seas are 2-3ft. On the beach, the waves are 1ft this morning. There could be a ridable LB wave, small wind-swell later today. Some storms are offshore AMI headed for the coast. These could bump up the waves a bit. Not a call for quality surf but a chance to get wet, most likely on a longboard. This pattern should stick around through Friday and ease on Saturday back to calm. Another trough may be around middle next week that could be slightly stronger.

Got some of the sickest waves ever on the Gulf! Friday was so fun, surfed about 8 hours (not all at once!) What a treat for May!

Abe, super low tide fin scrapers on the inside, went back out late and it was very peaky little bowls, just painfully inconsistent, 2 good waves every half hour, heard wildo was fun but had to stick with the one down the street instead of driving up N. actually looks more solid on the cams today

Chris – where in Central America are you going? “What to expect” really depends on the country dude.

    Flashback to Hurricane Charlie –
    http://www.heraldtribune.com/article/20140520/article/140529971?p=5&tc=ar
My morning FB Post: As we approach the 2014 Hurricane Season, it’s always good to review lessons learned. Tracking Hurricanes connected me to one of the best “LOCAL” weather forecasters I know…. not a professional …but a Surfer w/ Weather Savvy & Instinct for how the weather goes here in Southwest Florida – Micah has the best website ( Aurasurf.com ) for surfing forecasts in SWFL…but come ‘cane time he provides ‘Cane forecasts. I remember reading his call for intensification and the hook into Charlotte Harbor…. I become a loyal fan and through the years not only have I learned more about weather, a most wonderful “friendship” is shared.

Thanks Evy, very kind. I will try and do a good job this season. I’m thinking it’s going to be active. Last year was such a dud, it has to turn on. My big toe told me. The water is warm already here in the Caribe 82-84degrees already? and there is no Sahara dust… How long has it been since a real cane has rounded 3rd base and unleashed furious barrels onto WFL shores? Gustav? so overdue…

you are set, popoyo is sick, great waves… only thing is dont go when a TS or hurricane is near, it turns the wind onshore
there is not much there, nothing to do but surf and chill

    http://www.smh.com.au/world/sharks-may-hold-key-to-hurricane-forecasts-20140223-hvdh9.html
About three years ago, they discovered a remarkable pattern: the fish remained in waters that were about 26 degrees Celsius, the minimum required for tropical systems to develop.
In addition, many swam into the waters around tropical systems, which churned up nutrients and made hunting for food easier.
The tag data shows many fish swam directly into the paths of storms, said Nick Shay, a professor of meteorology and oceanography at the university.
For instance, a Blue Marlin in September 2004 swam under Hurricane Ivan in the Gulf of Mexico. A tarpon did the same thing with Hurricane Katrina the following season.
“It became really clear with the Ivan case how valuable this information could be,” Dr Shay said.
Some sharks, such as nurse sharks, might provide an early warning that a strong storm is in the making, as they tend to run when a system’s internal pressure is dropping.
“It’s like a canary in the coal mine,” said research assistant professor Neil Hammerschlag.

Would love some TS action this season! Love the posts, too! Interesting about the fish/storm correlation, really cool article! On a side note, anyone catch any waves this evening? Naples Pier had some waist-ish sets roll through, good enough to get out and catch a few…

Thanks for the shout out, ha! We love this site down south, first thing I check every morning!

sick post evy. We could use more predictable data on the development and track of storms. More fish tagging? I am also wondering based on your post if the tarpon and blue marlin data are contradictory to the relevance of fish entering storms. The researcher said, “Nurse Sharks”. I wouldn’t doubt that we can draw similar conclusions for various similar fish, but the difference between a blue marlin, a tarpon, and a nurse shark seems quite different. Interesting hopes for weather predicting. It seems realistic that fish would be where they can feed easily and plentifully.

cb – I spent some time living in PuertoViejo, C.Rica (SalsaBravo is the “break” in that town…serious jaws & coral) …was close enough to ride horses through the jungle to Panama – one hell of a ride. Many folks would go to Bocas Del Toro to get their passports stamps (every 3 months you need to leave CR and and get stamped) I had opportunity to meet a serious Big Wave Surfer – from Argentina (surfed Mavericks) who now makes PV his home. I hesitate to type his name w/out asking him first… in any event — he surfs that entire area and is savvy w/all the spots, especially what you speak of. I’m thinking of how to connect you…. so, I guess before I do anything… CB would this be something you’d be interested in??
AND IF YOU GO – COULD I PAY YOU TO BRING BACK MY/son’s priceless 3-string GUN SURFBOARD that HadesXhusband won’t send back to me because it’s “just a board” – you could even use it while there!

  9. Bfisch

Come to Florida and bring some PR surf with you!!! LOL! Hope to see you n a local line up soon. If not GC, then NSI…

Watching all this Fiji Pro is getting me wayyyy to stoked for this “coming” swell. Big props to Micro representing ireland showing dem aussie’s whats up

  11. gtstommy

Weak. What about the TS coming up from EPAC? In influence to our forecast? (If it stays intact enough?)

  12. Evy Alland

if I bring my board in to get the ding fixed…then, we will get something —

GTSTOMMY: I was wondering the same thing. This (below) is from Dr. Jeff Masters’ wunderblog. Check it!

    Rob

Will Boris emerge into the Gulf of Mexico late this week?
If Boris continues due north along its current path at its current speed for the remainder of the week, the storm will cross the narrowest part of Mexico and potentially emerge over the Southern Gulf of Mexico’s Bay of Campeche late this week. Once over the warm waters of the Gulf, the remnants of Boris will have the potential to regenerate into a tropical depression. The 06Z Tuesday run of the SHIPS model, which uses the GFS model to diagnose wind shear, is predicting that wind shear in the Bay of Campeche will be moderate, 10 – 15 knots, on Friday and Saturday. However, a band of high wind shear associated with strong upper-level winds from the subtropical jet stream is predicted to lie over the Central Gulf of Mexico, and these winds may interfere with development. Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) in the Southern Gulf of Mexico are about 28°, which is about 0.5° above average. These warm waters do not extend to great depth, and the total heat energy available to intensify a potential storm is rather low. SSTs cool quickly as one goes to the north, are a marginal 26°C in the Central Gulf of Mexico. The GFS model is bullish on developing a tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico late this week. But according to WSI’s tropical weather expert Michael Ventrice, who has guest blogged on El Niño in my blog, the GFS likely has insufficient resolution to handle a large tropical low pressure system forecast to set up over Central American late this week. These large low pressure systems often have “spokes” of extra spin that rotate around the main low, and these “spokes” are often erroneously developed into tropical depressions by the GFS model. The European model is much less gung-ho about developing a tropical system in the Gulf of Mexico late this week, and NHC is currently giving no chance that such an event will happen by Sunday. I put the odds at 10%.

    Rob,

Thanks! I’ll check out that blog, looks good. Bad news for waves, though…

I just had that feeling…. just barely enough of a southie wind, tide coming in, bump, bump on the sandbar and the ol grey mare caught some rides

  16. Stephen Sopitted

Nows our window for early season less insense storms. Our chances drop as the season progresses. New Symerna was fun on Wednesday. Epic June swell. It was doing its best trestles imitation in the morning. See my afternoon pictures on my blog stephensopitted.tv

  17. Ericito

Howdy! Just into NorCal got to surf PAC beach, la jolla, Encinitas , trestles, wedge, and steamers this morning! Trestles changed my life guess it was pretty good and Surfline has a feature about the day I went there! Santa Cruz is frickinn gnarrrrrly! Just picked up a 4/3 for this crazy El Niño winter on the way! Stoked I’m out here for 10 more days!

I got good waves at steamer lane and then up in pacifica, have fun ericito!

chris your just amping to get there

SSP glad you scored Smyrna, not to rub it in but Caribe had really good surf Wednesday and Thursday.

  18. Charlie

Since theres no surf, anyone wanna go fishing? I haven’t had much luck in the flats lately but I’m keeping at it. Went to St. Augustine this weekend and shot a good sized flounder with my bowfishing setup the other night.

  20. mdub

sorry for the non report today we’ve been without electricity and internet since six am

  21. Charlie

Stephen I live in the Bradenton area. Travel up to Pinellas quite a bit. Don’t mind driving a little as I’m about 40 minutes from the closest fishing spots already anyhow. Where are you at?

  22. Evy Alland

South winds @ 15mph – made for some little waves — I knew bringing the Long board in for ding repair would work… lucky to have my Fish and get some wave play — but I am far from satisfied…..more WAVES please!

  23. Bfisch

Fun little wave this evening on low tide. Might be more for tomorrow…. Fishing is so good right now, the bite is on!
