Volcom Team in Puerto Rico

The latest WFL Surf Forecast located below.

A lot of us gulf-coasters used to stay at Rancho Coral in Esterillos Oeste when we made our trips to Costa Rica back in the day. This little ripping grom was there. This is little Carlos Muñoz (not so little anymore) in PR for the ASPR contest this weekend. He was surfing really good just blowing up at Pools this morning. All Photos: Micah Weaver.

Monday WFL Surf Outlook: 2 scenarios to talk about as we begin the week in the grand quest for our next surf. 1. The weaker slower system that only provides a brief 36hr window of waves or 2. A stronger, faster system that could provide between 48 to 72hrs of waves. I’m going with the latter because all the ear marks are there, even the NWS is hinting this system is going to be stronger than currently forecast with a chance for severe WX and tornadoes. In that scenario the low is powering up on Thursday and the surf comes up with a ridable wave in the afternoon on Thursday from strong SW pull as the storm approaches. We all agree Friday is the big day. The big blow. Yeah chunky and onshore, cool… But will there be a clean-up Saturday am? Some chest high barrels with offshore winds? That is the question will will be trying to solve this week as we get close to wavedom. Check back on Tuesday as the system gets closer.
Thursday PM: Chance for knee to waist high choppy SW wind waves late in the day at best south facing beaches.
Friday Chest to head high choppy, chunky surf at cold front spots with gusty NW winds.
Saturday Waist high glassy leftovers with NE winds at the best cold front/groundswell spots.

Monday Morning Discussion Dude from the NWS Ruskin:
THE DEVELOPMENT AND PROGRESS OF THIS SYSTEM WILL BE WORTH WATCHING AS CURRENT MODEL SOLUTIONS BRING VERY FAVORABLE DYNAMICS INTO THE PENINSULA OF FLORIDA. A HEALTHY LOW LEVEL JET…AN 110-120 KNOT UPPER LEVEL JET…PLENTY OF MOISTURE…AND A 500 MB TROUGH DIGGING INTO A LARGE PORTION OF THE STATE ARE ALL INGREDIENTS PROVIDING FOR POTENTIAL SEVERE WEATHER ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY FRIDAY. THE FORECAST CHALLENGE IS WHETHER THE INGREDIENTS WILL BE PRESENT TOGETHER TO CREATE STRONG TO SEVERE STORMS.

CURRENTLY…IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO PINPOINT STORM MODE AND TIMING…BUT CLIMATOLOGICALLY A SYSTEM LIKE THE ONE FORECAST COULD PRODUCE A STRONG SQUALL LINE THIS TIME OF YEAR…WITH POTENTIALLY SOME EMBEDDED TORNADIC ACTIVITY…THAT COULD BRING A WIND THREAT TO THE AREA. PRE-FRONTAL SUPERCELLS CANNOT BE RULED OUT…BRINGING HAIL
AND WIND THREATS TO THE AREA.

Caribe Heads-up: Solid swell on the way for Monday 3/3. Another pulse Wednesday and another Saturday so lots on the board finally as the waves in PR are about to turn on.

GoodMorning AuraSurf… I am liking the morning report BIG — especially cause that means my favorite spot will most likely go off and the weather and water are WARMING ! Nothing worse then a mermaid in dry dock :))
Till then I’m a Girl w/ a Rod, instead of a stick, POMPANO are here <3

no idea ericito but if it worked imagine that, unlimited board supply in the everglades. that tree is the bane of Florida’s environment

  2. Evy Alland

Ericito – The SAP of the Melaleuca is VERY NASTY BUSINESS – some folks are highly allergic to it….I’ve even heard that when they are fresh cut the “fumes” around it can bother some folks seriously –not sure on this…but the sap… is nasty. I’ve gotten it on me as well as my sons growing up… rash was worse then sumac.
73 degrees this morning… I don’t care if it’s flat… taking the board out this afternoon, even if I just paddled from one end of the beach to the other….I have to get in the water….

  3. jack

When I was getting my workout at Venice beach public this morning, I saw some pretty damn ridable waves. Solid knee to thigh and well formed — at least for a little while. I would imagine Evy spent some time on a nice little sandbar at Siesta or somewhere like it.

  4. Skrims

I found some pretty fun lil sliders this afternoon in T.I.. Perfect thigh high. 2 peeps out. Love these mini under hyped groundswell days on a big board.

I got the BOOTY !!! HEAVEN, TOTALLY HEAVEN ON EARTH…… Lady Gulf….O my GOOODNESSS…she was sooooo ful of LOVE…. thought I was in heaven. Super sweet, gentle lacy waves…. & for the first time in a very, very long time — like 2plus years…. while I was in the water, the Dolphin Pod of Sarasota Bay went swimming by & as LUCK would have it…. I was able to see the Matriarch (I recognized her fluke) who just happens to be the same age as me….the Gulf was teeming with all kinds of fish, sea rays, manta rays — all jumping, feeding and feasting and little me, catching great little waves…. Fog would roll in so it was hard to tell the difference between the sky or the sea….and for the first time in a very long, long time….I didn’t surf alone and well, it’s dakine to find a merman
    TOTALLY BRINE BLISSED & BLESSED

  6. Bfisch

Really fun waves at top secret, then the grom surfed siesta until a beautiful gentle 6′ tiger shark swam right up to us in thigh deep water, and I mean right up to us! He was less than 2 feet away from my 5 year old. Freaked me out a bit, but the grom kept on surfing…

  7. Evy Alland

there is a lot of perk in my coffee this morning – often happens -sometimes for several days- after a good Surf session. Still on CLOUD*NINE ….yesterday was one of those POST CARD PERFECT Surf days that always will be imprinted in my mind. Truly an affirmation this is my latitude & longitude and I AIN’T MOVING, I also have to acknowledge my connection to the Gulf is stronger then ever…. and no matter how much Epsom salts I pour into the tub….. once you go mermaid… the body, soul&spirit really needs the REAL BRINE. Mermaids in dry-dock truly wilt in the winter months….thankfully, my 3 hour soak and surf in the Gulf of Mexico yesterday revived, recharged and re calibrated the ol mare ….-so- today,
    : ))) I BE PERKY

BFISCH…. I’m wondering is Your secret place the same as mine ??? are you on SK ????

  8. fbc

Bfisch that is spooky but awesome! I had so much fun yesterday, beautiful and refreshing water, no suit, and the waves were standing up for a fun morning-lunch sesh. rays and dolphins catching air

  9. CDE

BG picked up that south swell pretty good..fog was crazy but it was very fun for most of the afternoon on my lb.

  10. Bfisch

Evy – My top secret spot is the same as Jack’s, FBC’s, and everybody else who likes the aqua-cirques. Not so secret, “Top-Secret” spot… My grom surfed the north end of public beach when we met that beautiful & gentle creature with lots of sharp teeth.

  11. DW

Wow! lots o’ stoke in these comments for the lil’ knee-thigh hi swell last Saturday…that’s cool. I missed that but maybe another one tomorrow. Guess us gulfsters would be totally frothing if it was like the glassy waist swell like the EC had this past weekend, but more likely more knee-thigh stuff. We take what we can get ’round here.

  12. circuitboard

Many thanks to Micah for all the pics and showing me the spots in Rincon..
Rincon is a great community with a lot of scenery and good waves. Everyone was friendly and likes to have a good time. I’ll be going back real soon!
If you plan to book a trip to PR definitely hook up with Micah and support this website..

Thanks circuitboard! southwest winds kicking in the gulf. tomorrow could skunk and be lame but I think there is also a chance it could be a sneaker at a couple spots with fun waves, keep an eye on it. lots of WX headed in front of the front and a good wind break behind it, hope the “top secret” spot is fun lines at some point mañana!

  14. Bfisch

How long does short period swell take to get from 42003, 208 NM offshore to our coast? Trying to judge the 5′ @ 6 sec swell’s ETA.

    1. admin Post author

its on the other buoys too and those were always apx5-6hrs from the buoy to the beach. 6 seconds is slower than a real g swell

    PLEASE HELP!

My wife & I adopted a wonderful, sweet dog in Puerto Rico in December. We are very sad to say, we must find a new home for her. She has been crate & leash trained, and is great with all other dogs, people, and kids. Our 3 & 5 year old kids and neighbors play with her every day. One of our original dogs will not let her join the pack and cannot cope with any new dogs in her territory. She has all shots and health certificate and I’m giving her crate, food, and favorite toys with her. Please email my wife at gabgrl49@gmail.com if you know someone looking for a wonderful dog. She is about a year old, so she’s still a pup. She is the sweetest & most lovable dog I have ever met.

  16. gomexglider

Bfisch, knowing the breed(s), size, weight and pic might help. Also there are some dog rescue orgs in Florida that may be of assistance.

  17. Bfisch

Mixed breed, I can email pics, she’s very cute and weighs 33 lbs. Mainly black with some brown markings & looks like a dingo with flopped over ears.

there is still a wave on the buoy, it should last till dark… maybe a little smaller, hopefully not. hope you find some surf. let us know

  18. Cde

Looks like it still may be building on Venice. I’m heading to a beach south of there in the next hour or so. I’ll give you an update jack.

  19. ChRish

Thigh, occ + and semi-choppy to semi-glassy dependent on what the wind was doing at a popular TI break in Pinellas. Tide was a bit fat when I left but the bump was still rolling in. Might be worth a look after work if you really need to get wet. Bring the log.

  20. Fuggin

Mdub on the updates today! Stuck at work so slash on for me! Suday is my bday and there are usually waves for me every year, I hope this isn’t it and we get some early next week… getting closer to that “grand master” status lol

  21. jack

Thanks for the updates, guys! I scored an hour’s worth of pretty decent rides between 5:45 and 6:45. Nice to see some of the regulars down at Top Secrets.

  22. Bfisch

7 hours in the water today & top secret fired for 2 hours late morning was waist to shoulder SLABS! Glassy early then again late in the day. What a great little front! Watched some amazing surfing…

  23. Evy Alland

missed the waves…. but the posts here are a great read
Fuggin …wishing for some waves to come your way — best gift ever I say

  24. DW

Agree with Chrish above, that late morning-pre noontime push in TI made for some fun long little rights on my LB and all the SUP’ers were leaving when I got in…fun early lunch break from the daily grind!

On another note I saw this pic (see link) from AMI. That’s a circa 1972 Jeff Crawford Surfboards twin fin that I traded to Juan Rodriguez maybe ten +- years ago for a new Boardsworks Hyson Twinzer. I loved that old board but Juan said he wanted it bad for his collection. Nice to see it still being put to use in impressive fashion!

great story behind the classic fish DW thanks for posting. what’s Andy doing ripping on Juan’s collection? Dusting it off? we used to surf all pegadito(close to) to those piers after fronts back in the 80’s, that one wave was chest high. I knew that front would produce!

stoked for u guys, psyched for the Caribbean to turn on next week and hoping a lot of brace and duct tape will get me and the bum ankle back in the water and out from behind the lens

  26. DW

Yep, kinda what I thought too…is he loaning out the collection?! Juan’s collection was very cool, a true history of surfin’, from old balsa, Greg Noll’s Dora da Cat model, Lopez Lighting Bolt, to a Steve Lis fish and everything in between. Wonder if he still has it? I suspect he does.

  27. Evy Alland

Fuggin deserves WAVES for his B-day….. darn I wish something was rolling in this Sunday…. guess we got to wait a few days to celebrate…good to read at LEAST we have a chance for something real soon.

  28. RUSS-D

Well happy Bday fuggin and I hope you went east as it was really fun today after high tide. Long fast fun lefts in Melbourne/OA area. Nothing wrong with Grandmasters, I just stepped into that category in ESA. And went over to the East Coast and took 1st for the season against those guys. I wish more Gulf Coasters would compete over there. I bet they would do well.

  29. jack

Oh man I’m excited. I hope the forecast holds — I love those big, blown-out days. They’re the only chance I get to swim out to end of the jetty and get some bigger drops.

  30. Evy Alland

Good on you Russ…. GrandMaster… love the sound of that, Hope Fuggin scored B-day waves on the other side of the Sandbar …and me wellllll, I’m just loving the forecast. Oldest son is visiting from TX and it would be soooo cool to score some waves w/ my kid.

  31. fuggin

Thanks for the bday wishes, I actually spent the day at work as a bargaining chip for taking the day off for this next swell. It’s a lil late but better than never. I’m stoked, I love spring fronts and this one looks potent! Shakas all around

  32. Bfisch

RussD – You will see a good showing of Gulfcoast surfers at ESA Southeast Regional Championships at the end of the month representing West FL. Hope to see you there and congrats on the division 1st place! We will have a West FL tent set up, so stop by!

  33. Chris

Flying into PR early Sunday morning going to try and get shacked for a few hours then check out the ASPR comp then go back out an get some before dark so stoked!! Hopefully my board makes the trip safely. Anyone have tips on board packing?

  34. RUSS-D

Chris, go get some of that black foam pipe insulation(plumbing section at home depot), and wrap the rails with it. Then get and wrap the rest of the board with bubble wrap. Insert is a good travel board bag and it should be as good as it is going to get. I have done this a few times with success.
