Maybe you would not go to St. Croix for a surf trip but you might just end up there and it could be summer time… With many of the Caribbean islands, the south side is good for surf in the summer and the north side is good in the winter. Saint Croix has wind all the time and it gets wind swell so unlike NW Puerto Rico you might be able to find some waves in the middle of summer. It was cool, like an old surf trip where you don’t know anything going in and so I met some guys in dive shops and different places and just asked them about surfing on the island. They all seem pretty negative. They didn’t understand that I was only looking for a 3 foot wind wave to break up the summer blues. You know bigger waves would have been nice but it’s mid-June so let’s just surf anything. The water is beautiful, the sea is gorgeous and it’s nice to be here in STX riding waves. So my search started on the South Shore and the South Shore is surrounded by a barrier reef much of the way so it is pretty challenging to find ridable surf close to shore. I finally found some waves at a place called Grassy Point but Grassy Point was way more sketchy than it looked. There is this house out in the middle of the sea, you can’t miss this spot! It’s beautiful and it’s surrounded by grassy hills but it’s not an easy paddle out. The reef is shallow, there sea urchins everywhere. Yet it’s a fun little left that lines up really good. There’s actually some reef that sticks up in the take off zone so I was taking off a little wide. I was surfing it by myself for the first time and riding across the face after maybe three turns and 40 yards down the line there was this big ball of what looked like brain coral sticking up on the inside so I had to kick out before that! Paddling Out: I actually had to walk out to the edge of the cliff to paddle-out, kind of sketchy. I got an urchin in my finger jumping off the rocks. I was glad I was riding an older rental board. I picked it up on the West Coast from Freedom City Surf Shop in Fredricksted. The surf was fun, it was worth it. The Grassy Point is totally doable it’s a fun little surf spot, it’s a good left. Have fun if you surf it. I didn’t try paddling from the beach, too many urchins. I walked along the cliff as far up as I could and paddled out between the rocks. Conditions: You want like 4 to 6 foot seas from the ESE or SE and there should be a fun left peeling off there. I think the north side has better quality surf in the winter time but then you have to find protected spots because it’s usually windy. In conclusion, Saint Croix has a great Vibe. There’s not that many people there. Frederiksted is just so sleepy in the west. On the East Side you can drive for miles and not see another person. There’s tons of waves out east. The island is beautiful. They don’t throw their trash everywhere, they care about their island not like the garbage in Puerto Rico. So if you want to be by yourself and you don’t care about scoring six foot barrels it’s a great place to surf, Love STX.
St Croix Update Solid SE trade swell on the way for the S coast of St Croix. We met lots super cool people yesterday. Lot’s of Rasta’s, expats Americans from the mid west, Cubans and Puerto Ricans. Many expats have just bailed on life in the states and are grubbing it out down here in their own personal Margaritaville. Most work in the tourism industry. St Croix does not have many people. 50,000 on an island that is 30 miles long. That’s about equal to the population of Aguada and Rincon put together. Today we are meeting a friend who used to live on PR and moved over to St Croix 4 years ago. He’s taking us around, can’t wait…
The more I look at the coastline of St Croix the more I get excited. The ocean and beaches here are beautiful. There is a ton of geography in the way that the coast bends in and out. Great surf set ups around every curve and there are 100’s of curves in the coast. This place gets Indo good during hurricane swells. In normal short period conditions not so much but for a surf starved gulf coaster you could get tons of waist to head high wind waves.
St Croix is awesome. A gulf coaster would fit right in because no one thinks there is surf here. It’s been a wonderful vacation. STX is a killer island, amazing beaches, gin clear diving, cool vibe, and it’s a US territory. Full write up next week. I have a convention this weekend so I’m checking out for a few days. Comments are open.
Costa Rica has been a favorite destination for surfers for decades. Easy access to perfect surf, friendly locals, natural beauty and amazing tropical wildlife are all easily available. Uvita is one of the up and coming areas in SW Costa Rica. It is desirable due to it’s close proximity to the consistent waves of Playa Dominical and it’s an easy striking distance to Pavones, one of the world’s longest, funnest lefts. Casa Uvita features comfort in new construction minutes from the surf breaks of Dominical with an awesome view of the whales tale. Check into Casa Uvita for your next Costa Rica surf trip.
