Hurricane Beryl barrels thru the Caribbean. Report from Rincon, PR. Beryl surf outlook for WFL.

1pm yesterday when the swell hit. The lefts were very good just a long wait between sets: Domes Beach, Rincon, PR.

How I will remember Beryl: That first day we got reverse swell from Beryl was amazing. I was calling Domes Padomes bc the lefts were roping, starting behind the rocks at Deadmans and peeling into the middle of Domes, like 3ft at 15seconds… I got some long lefts but I would give them all back to spare everyone the destruction he wrought… Nervous about the rest of hurricane season…

Day 2 Beryl swell at Domes, Rincon, PR…
We almost never get waves in July so this is good for us but bad for anyone in the path of Beryl.

Wed 4pm Fun surf in Rincon, PR again today from Beryl. Thought and prayers for Jamaica and the Caymans. Based on past history(Dean was much bigger and stronger but same track) I do think WFL may get a small channel swell Saturday at best south swell spots only, that’s my best guess. I updated the details way below. 96L is also coming with way more south in it so waves are likely next week also. Sorry the details are not firm but anyone who says they know exactly what will happen is crazy…

WED 5am BEryL Take: I did get barreled by Beryl 🙂 got a couple small but quality backside tubes yesterday.

1pm yesterday when the swell hit. The lefts were very good just a long wait between sets: Domes Beach, Rincon, PR.

GM guys it’s pumping down here this am so just a quick update… Models still don’t show a lot from Beryl but he sure did produce for PR. And its the same set up with the south swell having to bend back and go SSW. It was pumping yesterday, came up at 1pm here in Rincon, LP south swell like 15 seconds… The only problem that made it not epic was there was like a solid 15-20minutes between sets. This am in NW PR, the period is shorter but a ton of waves are on the Marias cam. If Beryl’s south swell made it to WFL, it would be late on the back side of the storm, probably every 15 minutes a set in the waist high range Saturday PM(best south swell spot)? If he shot south swell to the west side of PR will he shoot south swell to west side of Florida? Pray for Jamaica… Maybe some waves from the BOC western gulf… More later…

Some barrels from Beryl.

Look at this left!

Tuesday WFL 7am Updater: The EURO likes WFL better than the GFS. Slightly better chance if the EURO is right. Solid hurricane in the channel with a good wrap N of Belize… Maybe? Don’t get your hopes up as of Tuesday, still no WFL waves in sight bigger than 1ft… No waves in Rincon yet… Maybe later…
PTSD 101: I feel so bad for the people in Jamaica, ughh that sucks… The other night, right before I went to sleep a buddy in Cabo Rojo sent me a screen shot of a computer model showing a hurricane hitting PR and I had such a fitful night! I woke up in a panic thinking we were going to get hit and I needed to get to Home Depot before all the plywood was gone… I jumped up, got on the pc and both models showed it going south, HUGE relief… But it gives some insight into how much trauma I feel 7 years after Maria. My mindset: It will be a miracle if PR does not get hit this season. I say 50/50 at best. It supposed to be a really bad season. Last year we caught a huge break as a dream season unfolded with 2 months of hurricane swells and no damage, just perrrfect waves. This year I don’t think we will be as fortunate. Hurricane hits are absolute RANDO. Just dependent on the patterns. I believe prayer works so this morning I’m praying for everybody in the Grenadines and Barbados and everyone in Jamaica also!! Prepare the best you can, hunker down and then pick up the pieces, that’s all you can do! Life in the Caribbean…
Monday 7/1/24 WFL: This morning the buoy is 1ft at 8, on the beach it looks really calm to start July. Beryl is not forecast by any models to send swell to WFL. Why? Beryl is forecast to hit some pretty good shear in the Central and NW Caribbean. As it enters the window passing the channel Thursday night it is a small, weakening hurricane with more easterly winds than anything. It is also really far down near Belize with not much south push forecast. A ridge is now forecast to strengthen over the GOMEX keeping Beryl down. Once in the BOC, he is forecast to move to Mexico under that ridge. There is a chance this could change so check back Wednesday. 96L may have a better chance to make WFL surf a week plus from now but that’s a ways out. Summary: Beryl is forecast by the major model camps to be an east wind hurricane by the time it gets to the window and no models are showing south swell making it to WFL more than more 1ft south lines… Sorry for the bad news but thoughts and prayer for everybody in Beryls path this am. NW PR notes below…
Details by Diaco updated 7/1 For best south swell spots. St Pete will probably be smaller.
Monday 7/1 1ft south line.
Tuesday 7/2 1ft WSW line…
Wednesday 7/3 calm…
Thursday 7/4 calm
Friday 7/5 calm.
Saturday 7/6 Beryl best guess: inconsistent knee to waist high peak at best south facer only.
Sunday 7/7 1ft south line.
Monday 7/8 Possible Cayo Hueso 1-2ft SSE waves from 96L.
Tuesday 7/9 Should be waves: BOC swell from Beryl, 1ft swell, knee to thigh plus 2-3ft south swell but it’s a ways out.
Wednesday 7/10 1-2ft south lines.

Reverse swell at a Rincon secret spot.

Save this to see who’s right: The GFS has a top heavy TS 200 miles below PR. The EURO has a solid TS but small 300 miles south of PR. Intensity is way off!
Mucho south coast hype in PR: Everyone here is headed to the south coast but IMO Rincon has better wind and water quality for this event. It’s just as big at Reverse Domes as it is on the west side of Cabo Rojo. We are expecting 2-3ft south swell tomorrow PM and maybe Wednesday. I’ll post pics…

Looks like it all stayed south of skyway. Venice cam is down but it might be working down there. Drove by the zoo on my way to work and nada there.

i was in clearwater beach 6/12 afternoon for recreation and a 1′ 2 wave set would roll in every so often, wasnt even bodyboardable.

skim was firing again (even better today) at that one area deep-long-shore trough-sloped-beach-inlet-point-cove-jetty-spot. it really jacked up the swell. so wiped…cheers.

Channel swell is the best swell. If current trajectory stays (and it won’t) I’m considering driving up to the panhandle next weekend to try and grab some barrels.

don’t believe the wave models right now, the GFS was way off intensity beyond 72-120hrs
