Hurricane Cristobal

This is Domes on Friday. Like a thigh high NNE swell 8 seconds from a gradient not Cristobal. Cristobal threw swell for 300 degrees unfortunately PR was in the 60 degree shadow that did not get it. Skunk of ages, unbeevable... It's not just the gulf... Cristobal was a hybrid from the get go, not a true cyclone, no eye, no NW quadrant, blah blah blah. I surfed waist high Pools Thursday night and thigh high Domes while dreams of Tahitian barrels played in my head. Boooooooooo. Have a good Saturday...

For Saturday am: I’ve been watching the disturbance near Jamaica today and satellite looks good but none of the models are calling for anything more than an open wave until it almost hits Tex/Mex. Small chance it could fire south or SSE winds in the channel but more likely the winds stay east and WFL doesn’t get the south swell potential. That kind of season so far and nothing is showing SSE winds in the channel so lets be realistic and not get any false hopes up, gonna be too far west. Sorry to bear bad news and I hope I’m wrong…

Don’t go crazy like me… I had a few days of really good surf at the beginning of June and one morning in July, other than that I feel like I have not surfed all summer. Dieing for a real swell, hoping that in 2-3 weeks the ATL will turn on. I have been riding a 20″ BMX bike on the steep Caribbean hills. Before I started surfing I used to ride BMX in the 80’s. It’s been a great rush and some solid exercise to get me thru this flat spell. What have you been doing? post up.

I have been training at my gym solid. Back in really good shape … possibly better than I have ever been. Lots of time spent at that place. Surfing wise – not much on my end – just taking my kid surfing as much as I can …it’s been rideable on the log every time we have gone out. Gonna try again tonight in fact. Skateboarding … we do that nearly every night too … lots of things to do to say active. Just wish I had more time to do it all … work seems to chew up a great portion of it.

i saw the pics of you taking your daughter surfing, you looked rocked up, props for keeping it together

i’m in the fat white and pasty stage, summer is like our surfing winter of no waves, raining every day since bertha blah blah blah… bertha was a bummer… this place gets surf from a lot of different angles but what a skunk, we dont get ESE swell like the entire EC (see the surfline article), tough to miss it completely and see the entire EC go off

ive been checking the models 3 times a day I cant shake it i got 3rd stage surfing depression baaaaaaaaaaaaad.

Been skating at least once a week. We have little concrete bowls all over Tampa now: Town and country, largo, new Tampa, Brandon, Bradenton, Lakeland, Dunedin. I try to go if I have a job nearby and daycare covered. Consistent chest to head high walls, dig it.
Bro bowl is getting torn down soon….. They say they will make another one that’s bigger, better, faster, stronger,,, we’ll see.

went to the skatepark here today, felt really good to get on a ramp, kids had a blast too.

Back from the Exumas. I hiked many miles around one of the islands & found 3 spots starting to work from Bertha one evening. Expected good waves the next morning, but when we checked it in the morning it was flat… Very small South swell window in the Exuma island chain & Bertha couldn’t supply. Lots of fish & lobster and a great sail home!

MW, I hope you all get some waves soon(as well as us here in the GoMex). I have gotten into road biking a lot lately. On the weekends i ride 50+ miles each day, and weekdays I try to ride once or twice, as time permits, about 10-20 miles. I also do a CrossSUP workout with my buddy Christian. It is similar to CrossFIT , but geared towards SUP/Surf and has a lot of balance and critical thinking while tired type stuff in it. I also try to get out on the SUP as much as possible.
Getting out on my skateboard would be the best way to stay in tune with surfing, but I just haven’t got the time to add that into my schedule right now. I could give up some of the time on the bike, but I love it so much right now. I used to have a ramp in my back yard, but it deteriorated with time and I didn’t maintain it. Maybe I need to build another one?

For those of us that had fun with Bertha. Hoping for a repeat coming from 94L.

    Point Break quotes:
Surf Shop Kid: Hey man, a lot of guys your age are learning to surf. It’s cool. There’s nothing wrong with it.
FBI Agent Johnny Utah: I’m 25!
Surf Shop Kid: That’s what I’m saying. It’s never too late. Hope you stick with it. Surfing’s the source, man. Can change your life. Swear to god.

Since we just have small waves right now with short period here in the gulf, I’ll just bring out my sons foamie and mess around. Don’t judge me bros, Lol. Well actually, everybody is entitled to his/her opinion, don’t care anyway, I’m just having fun. Peace gulf peeps.

If your having a bad day, catch a wave. – Frosty Henson

Hey Stephen, you could have gave me a Shaka, I’ll throw it back to you for sure.

Today, with conditions of short intervals, happy to score some fun ones. I guess in the gulf, for me, it’s that One Wave, One Wave, that connects to another and will jack up more than forecast, that will give you a longer ride and some wall to play with, will make your sesh worth it. Lady gulf was generous enough to give me that today.

Here in the gulf, we treasure waves more than others.

Me and you surfed Upham a few hours after landfall too MW … remember those crazy looking squall lines that were rolling through? Upham was barely thigh high I think …

Russ … me too 3/4 ply … $500 or so here. I still have all the pieces that I did for the windows. 3/4 is soooo heavy.

  11. DW

That is the WFL Gulf-coaster’s dilemma, to get a big enough storm up in the gulf to produce quality swell means somewhere is gonna get whacked bad. After Charlie they had a new pass on North Captiva (Charlie’s Pass) but it stilled back in quickly, first it could be navigated by bay boat, then only a flats boat, then jonboat, next kayak…now it is 4 feet of land with trees growing across it.

I think I am going to have to unfriend my new Costa Rican Friends on facebook. They keep sending me pics of the waves they are surfing every day. It is never below chest high there. And they travel around to find the best waves daily. One of them is a Hurley sponsred surfer named Josymar. He rips, and is one of the nicest people I have ever met. But oh man is he killing me with these images of perfection all the time, and we are so damn flat. Need to consider retiring in CR for sure, like next year after I win the lottery, or start a Ponzi scheme LMAO!!!! Going back there for sure.

    1. admin Post author

I couldn’t take that, insane pics of Costa Rica everyday. I’m going mental. It was hard to write the forecast today… I have been skateboarding with my kids so that’s cool. Im just trying really hard not to think about surfing right now and I thought I moved some place that had waves!

  13. Robbed72

More grom waves yesterday – all is not lost in that department … the onshore flow has been enough for a little consistent bump … other than that … this place is so flat that I’m taking up the “sport” of metal detecting – complete with dorky waders and floppy beach hat …

  14. evy alland

    BLARG on the forecast
been using the flat time to explore beaches to the north and south of me
found a grom swell on AnaMarie Island Sunday… had the Kahuna Board ….so I squeaked out several small rides –least it was something
Corey is the best… period —

Can’t look away from the Tahiti contest, WOW the waves are insane. Wilko got killed and came back and slater and Taj look way above the rest, CJ coming up later.

  15. gtstommy

OK, studying is done! (for now, praying forever, lol) So, we need the wave machine to turn on!!! Come on
    Tropics!

Thinking about you and the Wx your dealing with. I’m sure you have the girls prepared and hunkered down. Wishing you a quick return to sunshine! — TD

    BLARG – BAH
What the heck with that fricking right turn????
    LEFT….. GO LEFT
there’s a ton of us on the west/left coast of SWFL that are starvin & cravin

Gulf coast states not out of the woods just yet. Another new vortex South of PR now trying to spin, could slip under the islands and into the Gulf??? Fingers crossed!

Not impressed with td4 tonight, it just looks messy. General rule of thumb with trop cyclones, weak = west, strong/deep = north. No one has a handle on this thing and the models are still going back and forth. NHC is covering their butts with a nice wide “cone o’ death” stretching from the EC past the Bahamas. If we do get waves from this system, it won’t be pretty. EC has a solid chance at a nice swell if it takes the right side of NHC track, but if this thing does get into the peninsula or gulf somehow, it wont be in the sweat spot and close to home…IMO. That being said, a knee high line would suffice and get a smile on my face :/

I’m not getting stoked until the buoy pings. Free diving Spearfishing today was a great escape from the summer doldrums. Nothing like shooting a yummy fish in the face and having fresh sushi.

Bede can’t even properly shoulder hop out of his 8 somthing. Ceej gets an impossibly long tube, one of the longer tubes of the contest and gets a 6.4 to tie with Bede and Bede goes on. How weird, I’m so confused. Someone explain how the asp tiebreaker works? am i a kook but cj’s lost in the tube comeback should’ve been a 7 right?

  22. Bfisch

CJ had that for sure, mate! I was calling it in the excellent range. He got so robbed! How can he go mental on that wave and get a 6.4?????? I’m a kook too, if his wave was 6.4

If the heat score is tied, then who ever got the highest individual wave, wins the heat. CJ won that heat!

  23. Bfisch

Greatest heat of all time! Kelly & JJ tied 19.77

    9.9 10 9.1 8.17 9.4 9.77 9.87 No other scores & no wipe outs! You’ve got to be kidding me!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. gtstommy

Overall good judging, though the panel definitely have their favs. But, what an amazing contest, we are lucky to have been able to watch that live! For sure the contest that all others will be compared to for years to come.

  25. Chris

By the way I know a few people on here dive and spearfish I was out in boca grande a couple days ago and I found a lobster?! Has anyone else ever came across one in our area? I know we have them in the keys and on the eastcoast but I had no idea we had them up here

  26. JB

Agree with y’all when it comes to ceej, only a Florida boy could scratch a 6.4 out of a 2. Didnt think Medina could beat Slater or JJ. Seemed like he hadn’t taken a death drop all contest untill Kelly forced him, the look on his face was like he saw a great white yet he really dominated that heat. Great win for the 20 year old, gonna be fun watching Slates try to catch him the rest of the year.

  27. DW

SSP – I read your link above about the proposed changes in Dunedin and think you could contact the good folks at the WFL chapter of Surfrider and the Tampa Bay Watch organization. They could get some attention drawn to this matter. Thank you for noting it on this site.

  28. Bfisch

Chris – Some of the biggest lobsters that I’ve ever seen were in the Gulf. Many reefs in the gulf hold lobster, but not like the keys or east coast. Most divers aren’t looking for Lobsters, so they usually won’t find lobsters… Keep searching those ledges & holes, and you’ll find a biggon one day! Good luck!

Anything in everyday life can be accomplished by waiting on hold firmly with
a certain objective even if there are hindrances towards success.
It’s not difficult to satisfy excess fat target by following the effective rules.
Working out with a good work out buddy likewise helps, in this way you stay motivated and focused to keep
