Bye December 2022!

Saturday WFL Weekend Outlook Below:

I was at the Compound on Thursday and got to check these blades out up close and they are sick, highly recommended! They also have a bunch of Firewire and CI boards that look awesome!

Saturday WFL Weekend Updater 12-31-2022 7am: Good news and bad news- Bad news, this 1st disturbance making for a rainy morning here in Seminole and elsewhere in WFL does not have much gradient at all and it does not look to be a wave make for today or tomorrow. The good news is the next system looks better with some south wind waves ahead of a front on Friday. It’s become a better shot at waves, cautiously optimistic that La Ninya hopefully doesn’t rob the juice out of it before it happens. Details below are updated.

Summary: A weak disturbance will be around this weekend. A stronger Low will deepen and pull S and then SW winds across the gulf on Tuesday.

Saturday: Slowly building south wind waves, 1ft/knee high at best south facers late.
Sunday 1ft, maybe knee high at best spots with onshore winds.
Monday calm.
Tuesday waves building slowly to knee to thigh before dark late Tuesday at best South facers
Wednesday: Knee to thigh at best south facers
Thursday clam to 1ft.
Friday building cold front waves knee to waist high and semi clean to clean at cold front spots with north winds.

My take- La Ninya has been killing WFL surfing for at least a year. It has taken all the power out of gulf systems and put a high pressure cap over the gulf most of the time. This forecast shows La Ninya only has about 30-60 more days of life left, after that expect the gulf to pick up a little going into Spring 2023 as the shackles finally come off.

Go Bucs!

So good to see her!

lol holy flashback to my freshman year in high school, i had a Minolta weathermatic that used 110 film, it was good for diving but not so much for surf pics. Remember when you had to wait a week or more to get your pictures back from the drug store ? kids got it easy today, instant gratification from a computer chip.

  2. Birdz.I.View

Great pic and story. Reminds me of the pre renourishment AMI days! Love to have some pics from those days pre 92.

  3. bob

that screenshot of the atlantic storm just beyond 180hrs looks wildd. A big WHOOSH of energy out in the atlantic sending a massive surge down to the caribbean, enjoy!

  4. Fuggin

The old GulfSurfForum! I used to haunt that message board and even had a tshirt! All night thinking about where that wave(Dos Pinos) could be ? La Nina and Red Tide Blues have me eyeing an East Coast trip for winter break. Probably Southern NC or OBX ?

  5. Gorgio

Omg man that picture!!! Blast from past. I love it. It was on the banner for the longest time back then. Stoked me out so much. Paul you still around? I miss the forum.

  6. Paul D

Gorgio, Fuggin, Micah! Bros, I miss the forum too but most of all surfing with you guys!

“Patterns eventually change…” means our great west FL surf sage LEGEND is saying get ready!!! Time to dust off my 5’5” Seafarer and lose about 10 pounds 🙂 If we can get half the quality of that historic 04 to 07′ run of waves, leave your boards by the door! I can’t wait for Spring 23!

Micah I’m still so grateful you introduced me to that wave, I’m sorry I then introduced it to everyone I knew that surfed LOL I’m sad to hear it’s not working anymore. Such a fickle thing that Dos Pinos though. People would drift in and out of it seeing nothing, then all of a sudden, the water got right and WHAM there were these beautiful barrels for like 20 minutes then flat, HA! Sometimes it would work from Dos Pinos to the ****** and there I got one of the best waves of my life.

I hope we get a run of great waves like that 04 to 07′. I don’t think WFL experienced anything like that, not just from a wave standpoint but a culture standpoint. It seemed like so much was happening, WFL had a surf scene! It seemed like everyone knew each other. Mike D and Tony C with amazing footage. You always had someone to chat with in the lineup. Aura Surf always got us ready to surf and Gulfster always had amazing coverage. If you weren’t there for that time, please check out Gulfster’s photo archives for those years! FUN TIMES! GSF crew was amazing, raising $2000 for hurricane Katrina relief and for 3 years we donated $500 a year to Metropolitan Ministries for holiday meals, absolutely stellar group of WFL surfing misfits we all are!

red tide gonna suck locally just a heads up. high levels on test 2 days ago. ill check it and see just in case i suppose.

the wind slacked some after the squall line and it was really fun till it picked up and switched direction. we havent had a south swell like that in ? red tide not too bad but its there, dead fish washing up…

  10. Fuggin

Yo PDange & 023fish! My GSF handle was CrotchRocket. I loved that message board. I see RussD in here sometimes. Anyways… pretty fun at VNJ late am 2-4ft and a few sandbars were working. Water was clean, looking at some of the FWC reports, it looks like Red Tide is blooming in new areas and fading in areas that have been dealing with it already. Hopefully the cooler weather and less daylight can flush it out somehow. Buoys are still bouncing, tomorrow am could be interesting if it holds.

thanks for the reports guys- where to surf today? you need a spot to maximize the small swell that is out there with the am outgoing tide.

  11. Fuggin

I had limited time and ended up at my usual haunt. There was definitely swell in the water but it wasn’t quite hitting the sandbars and the log was the call.

  12. Mike

Hyppio what up? Tradewinding down. Sunset inside middle jetty is as easy like Sunday morning. Looking for a good new years swell. Tobin out.

thax man good on ya for seeing that it could get ridable before dark knee high in st pete at 3pm

  13. Bob

I can smell the rotten fish thru those pictures lol, still some epic shots from Mo. Hey atleast i didnt get hit by a cat 5 hurricane it could always be worse. I accidentally stepped on a dead fish and it release the most foul smell iv ever sensed in my whole life. Iv never done that before but iv heard the dead fish have all the bacteria trapped inside of it, so once you open it up itll release something that is unlike any other scent on this planet.

  14. Tcure

Surfed Friday morning in pinellas. Small but clean thigh to waist waves. Fun to get in the water. Red tide was evident but not terrible. Heard it was worse Thursday.

  15. Ericito

I sprinted and foot planted a puffer fish last summer it exploded and stuck to my foot. Not fun. couldn’t see a dr anywhere!

Thrusday Friday were really fun, I surfed both days for my birthday surf!

Hoping for some cooperation on the wind next Saturday. Don’t think I’ll be able to sneak out mext Sunday Ala Christmas. Happy holidays yall.

  16. Fuggin

Wow those rotten fish stories are my worst nightmare. I’m feeling sick (blaming it on red tide I surfed in on Fri, unless the dr says otherwise this am). Idk if I’ll even attempt this coming weekend with the way I’m feeling.

  17. Al

Friday and Saturday were good on treasure island.
I wasn’t expect on Sunday 12-18-22 to be surfable until I read your Sunday update so I checked the webcam around 2pm and sure enough it was nice clean longboard waves. I got about 20 rides in an hour before I got cold. Good forecasting Micah.

  18. NateSmith

Great pics mo! Snagged a few knee to waist high waves at sand key yesterday eve was fun. A little shatter due the the sideshore wind but for the most part it was organized and manageable. The lefts were short and punchy vs the more soft rights. The sandbar is pretty good so looking forward to this next front. Been weird with these nne winds. No west in them.

i think im gonna save my energy for soul patrol saturday. we’ll see who really loves to surf and who does it when its convenient…

  20. RUSS-D

Well, dang. Some GSF Legends showing their faces here. 😀 Next thing you know TayRay will be here checking the surf with a flashlight for us, and then John Hansen will be talking about hacking everyone. LOL
I hope all is well with you Pdanger and 023. I don’t surf much anymore as my back is just trashed now. I do pop in here on occasion to see what’s up in the gulf surf world though.

  21. DW

Old guys, don’t let ’em kid you, Russd-D can still shred, seen it recently. Russ, maybe tomorrow, eh? Old bad backs think alike. 🙂

  22. Fuggin

Wind blowing right through my rubber this am but I was able to shake it off and find some really fun & solid waist+ high sets in North SRQ county on the Fishshape. I wore my spring suit on top of my 2mm full, booties, and spearfishing gloves(not neoprene but better than nothing!). When the sun peeked from behind the clouds it was actually nice, otherwise brrrrr.

  23. hd

dp was fun at sekret spot. really cold air so sluggish surfing but kept movin, lasted 2.5 hrs and got a few nugs before hitting the road to see the fam. beautiful morning and i hope im wrong but–adios winter! 80s in the forecast lol, we’ll see…merry christmas all and happy new year.
