I’ll take a stab at the summer Outlook May looks to stay pretty calm but there should be one surf event during the month along with a few days of rideable longboard waves. June has a 50/50 shot at some Tropical activity in the gulf which could bring fun surf. We will probably hit a flat fell in there somewhere for sure lasting 3 weeks during the hottest part of the summer so prepare yourself mentally for that. But I also think we’ll hit a stretch with some trouphy weather and a good chance a string of at least a week, maybe a couple weeks of Southwest waves at some point during the summer and then the hurricane season is supposed to really fire up- looking at the back half of August through September and October there will be a good chance for solid swell most likely in the Atlantic or possibly in the gulf and all prayers out that Another Dorian doesn’t pummel someone or Maria or Irma or Michael or Matthew Harvey Andrew Wilma. So all things being said I think that from now until the end of next October when we can start talking about cool fronts again we should see a slightly above average summer with a small possibility you could be well above average. More people than ever are surfing so keep in your back pocket those sandbars that are building up now, out of the way… if you hate crowds try not to surf in them.

Hola amigos just wanted to let you know a little change with the website. I have lost more than 50% of my income monthly. Wed WFL Surf Take 8am: Looking at the models this Wednesday am- the models show the storm notch up for sure. Being careful not to hype it, the low pressure stays pretty far away tracking from Texas/Oklahoma to Michigan. How do you explain the 25knt south winds the models are calling for all the way down in the Yucatan channel? It must be a big vortex and a solid gradient with the high pressure in the ATL. What I thought was unique was the chance for a fetch coming from the Bay of Honduras into the GOMEX. Most of it heads to Texas but is 9 second south swell possible early next week? Lots of strong local winds will make it not so discern-able and needing a jetty to clean it up. It’s cool to check it out and watch it. I’m not going to change the detailed forecast below. It looks accurate thru Sunday and may have to be tweaked for next Monday and Tuesday with a front sagging down the wind could go light N.

Can you surf? Do you even want to? Watching the news it does not seem that surfing in WFL is as off limits as it is in other places. Many other places… the extremes are Costa Rica where a guy got shot at ( though I know lonely stretches in Guanacaste are being surfed. Maui- you can still surf… SC has no restrictions. PR sucks for surfing right now. We have a growing problem with obesity here but we are not allowed to exercise except in doors. News today the will extend our curfew thru the curve which is expected at the end of this month. WFL: Could you surf N Jetty? PAG or some other spots that could be good early next week?

Tuesday Updater 4/7 WFL 8am Surf Outlook (Disclaimer: I realize many probably won’t be able to surf because of beach closures and ‘Shelter at Home’ advisories but I’m going to keep forecasting because I too am stuck at home and this website is one way for me to ‘work from home’. Thanks so much for checking in and keep checking back as we will be updating the content). The updated forecast… Big changes today that I did not see yesterday. The Friday front is notch down as the energy now gets sucked into the next system over the weekend. At just 120hrs we have building south waves with 25knt south winds over the eastern gulf on Sunday. SW swell for Monday with lighter NW winds as the low moves away. A week out the models show waist high west swell and NE winds for next Tuesday. Check back as we keep an eye on the developing WX scenario for next week. Summary of the daily forecast- Wednesday: Onshore wind ruffle PM with 10knt west winds. Thursday: Possible knee high log wave with the PM seabreeze. Friday: Knee high cold front wave at best spots only on the right time and tide. Saturday calm with offshore flow. Sunday building south waves waist to chest high by afternoon with 20knt south winds. Monday SW swell waist to chest high with light NW winds. Tuesday Knee to waist high west swell with light NE winds. This will probably change so check back… PR take below…

This Take is not at all meant to be nationalistic, political or racist it’s just an observation. I think there are good and bad in all races and all countries. This is just some observations about CULTURE because contrasting different places can help us to learn about others and expand our viewpoints.

When I moved to Puerto Rico the population was just below 4 million, 3.9 million people on a mountainous island 100miles by 30miles. Since then and especially after Maria the population has declined to the point where its 3.2 million now.

A few months back the Puerto Rican governor was overthrown for making different racist remarks and bigotry and a new governor was sworn in. Her name is Wanda and say what you want about her she has been pretty decisive. She has the municipal police, the state police, the media and the National Guard backing her up.

Here on this island the vast majority of the population is of the same race and the same culture so everyone pretty much conforms to the orders and most are being obedient. Everybody is mostly staying inside their homes. The locals here tend to be a little bit on the scared side. They drive below the speed limit in this area bc they’re scared of getting speeding tickets (even though you do not have to pay a speeding ticket here, it does not go on your permanent record, it doesn’t affect you in any way). Still people are scared of the police. Many people here are related to one another so the chance of getting put on the news is another deterring factor. When they first closed the beaches in this town all the news outlets showed a video of a local woman sneaking out of the beach through the bushes in her bikini trying to cover her face. It was horrible…

After seeing that everybody pretty much got in line with the lockdown, ‘toque de queda’ in Spanish. We’ve been through three weeks of lockdown and this is the fourth week. Next week is Semana Santa and everybody usually parties super hard on Easter Sunday like it’s the biggest drinking holiday of the year! Wanda is putting even tighter restrictions in place. No one can go out on Sundays, all stores are closed.

Is the lockdown working? The cases and deaths continue to rise here in Puerto Rico but I think it could be much worse given all the planes from New York and cruise ships that dock in SJU. This lockdown is especially hard on surfers…

On Friday I went to check the waves for Surfline, it was 6 in the morning and I crawled through the bushes at Pools Beach to get to Spanish wall, what a beautiful trail! It was green and clean, somebody’s been working on it. But then I hear that the border patrol, which is very active here stopping Dominicans has put trail cameras up to help notify the police to stop surfers. I wonder if I got on candid camera? Good thing I didn’t have a board with me. I did not attempt to surf even though the waves were going off!

Believe it or not I would say 80% of the population here in NW PR does not surf and they don’t want surfers to surf right now, Americans and locals… So there’s a lot of negative vibes towards surfers trying to surf. Like we’re going to pass the disease, We are carriers, we are transmitters. Guys have been trying to surf down past the river mouth towards Aguada and the police actually kicked them out of the water from the boat so it’s almost impossible to surf here right now and the waves are really good. All in all I knew when I moved here the culture was very conservative when it comes to situations like this and despite the lockdown people are getting on with their lives at home while we wait for this crisis to subside.
