Sat 8am WFL Surf Report and Forecast:
Knee to waist high clean little bowls in Venice this am. Looks fun but it’s fading fast on the buoys. The sooner the better if you want to surf today. Buoys are 3-4ft at 7 seconds from the south and SSW. There should be at least a knee to thigh plus wave around most of the day today esp at best south facing surf beaches. Today is it for awhile as eyes will turn to 92L east of the islands. The latest GFS does bring it gulf side next weekend. Wouldn’t that be sick? Let’s keep an eye on it. Thanks for blowing up aurasurf.com this week! And thanks to all who posted in the comments. How do you rate Hermine? Someone said best storm since 2008 (Ike,Gustav) do you agree? Shred till your dead!

been glad for some fun little knee high lines since Thurs. plus the mysto swell a bit earlier. Caught mysto at VSJ and then been going out of my usual routine at NJ and driving a little bit north to Sarasota every sunset where the water is shallow and the small lines are breaking further out. My belly needs the exercise and my stressed out overworked mind enjoyed the pressure release! Nobody out and all to myself, except for tourists asking me if I can let them have a try on my LB. NJ has been looking fun on JB’s site. Here’s to hoping the last 3 weekends in August start producing some tropical juice on either coast, I’m down for whatever it takes to hit it. Thanks for the reports MW

Hmmmm… I moved to Jax on Friday after a summer of flatness, then this… Have fun Gulf People!

  3. JDH

Thanks Evy,^ I’d imagine if that would happen then not to many I presume. Not me though. I’d take no ac if I could’ve been around when there were no obstructions to the beaches like condos, mansions, private roads with private gates. I’m not upset with the people who live there, it’s their right to, but I’d love to sit out at the Point O’rocks with nothing but palm trees and Australian pines and the Gulf. I’d set up a little garden and wouldn’t have a care in the world… But then again as I read your words about giving thanks to the Creator for Ericito’s recovery I’m reminded that in this life it’s about people and your empathy for helping other people is why we’re here. Not to soak alone. Of one had the whole ocean to one’s self what a pitty it would be so experience it alone.
Glad you and everyone else has been able to get some time in. For some surfers over here they start to get angry when it’s been as flat as its been but for me it’s just the set up for when everything comes together and you appreciate it that much more. The next time I make the kickout plunge I’ll remember this thread.

  4. My Info

WOW nice happy moment shared MW and deep commentary from JDH, that kind of vibe may bring us gifts made of waves

  5. JDH

Thanks everyone. I sure hope my vibe bring in some kinda swell out there. Until then I’ll just keep checking in on Aura and hope for the best. If anyone down south is looking to improve our chances for waves, on Sunday September 4th there is a beach clean up going on at north jetty. If we show some love the Gulf may show some love back.
In between you can check out this vid https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KVirdnlG80U where you can spot M-Dub ripping up the GC.

  6. DW

That projected Gulf low evaporated off the charts…bummer summer.

To add to MW’s Natural Art comment….on a historic note Natural Art was founded by Pete Dooley who grew and in South Tampa, was part of its early 60s surf crew and shaped boards with Lemus & Mendoza in West Tampa before moving over to Cocoa Bch in the mid 60s…the rest is EC surf history. 🙂

  7. JDH

Very cool bit of FLA surf history. Really amazing how many G.C transplants there are that had an effect on E.C surfing.
I had no idea that Alex Ribeiro rode Natural Art boards.
Super cool. I’ve never bought one other than stopping in the shop for some wax.

  8. DW

MW please use your awesome forecasting powers and crystal ball to move 99L out of the islands & up NE of Jax so as to get offshores to greet the Gaston swell and we all take a day or two off for an EC mini surf vacation next week! Wishful thinkin’ right?

JDH, us old-timers enjoy sharing gulf coast surf history with the young folks!

  9. Chris

Euro is putting 99L right under Louisiana ?? Gfs fizzles is it really a long shot for us to get swell gulf side from this the Euro has been the most reliable model over the past few years so I’m thinking that it’s path and development forecast will be the closet to what plays out

  10. JDH

DW, Young is a relative term but I’ll take it!

Yeah Chris, let’s hope so. Further south and west the better chance for us. I’ve seen the models jump around so much this past year getting me excited then let down so much that I’m having Cane season ptsd.

  11. JDH

Micah, I’ve often wondered if it’s happened to where if a good enclosed center storm passes south of you much further down if there on the west coast of P.R if a south/southwest swell can show up? I think maybe in 2005 the opportunity for it was there or maybe after but since you’ve been there or in your conversations with the locals have you heard of this happening? Looking on Google maps the setups on that swell direction look like it could set some spots ablaze.

sorry guys im at a convention in sju, im not sure on the EC forecast

JDH, my first year here the west side got some, we found surf near cabo rojo(TS Emily), SW PR then again even Mayaguez could get waves if there’s a closed hurricane down there(sandy 2012), but as you know the drought has been in the caribe too so we’ve had storms to the N but nothing to the south and we dont get anything until the fetch is south at 30mph at least, i have a spot on the N side that goes off during south swells the wave wraps 270 degrees breaking perpendicular to the the beach and barrels so Im dreaming of a south swell but it’s super elusive these years probably even more elusive than a WFL channel swell from a hurricane with an eye, low chances

  12. JDH

Nice! Pretty wild how that wave can bend that much around to the north. Just goes to show that bathsymetry is a major component in what can affect what we see on the beach.
Really neat to think of surfing at different parts of the island with all the possible setups but in PR ya never know who’s watching. Thanks for responding.

  13. Chris

Waves on the way I hope everyone surfs there brains out I’m ecstatic to surf in the gulf again.. I’ve been From Nsb to Indonesia this summer and I’m equally maybe even more stoked to get some waves at home.

  14. JDH

I swear there were! Haha. Down by the jetty I was seeing knee high lines breaking earlier or maybe it was my imagination. 🙂

  15. evy alland

GoodMorning…..waiting on daybreak & deciding what responsibilities I can cancel to get some brine time….

  16. Bfisch

Blowing South over 20 in the channel. I’d say channel swell shows up tonight and into tomorrow.

  17. Fuggin

A certain sand bar in central SRQ was working with the fat tide this am on the shoals. Knee-thigh occ waist lonnng lines with some push on the inside. Stuck at work now, hope the wind cooperates tomorrow am.

  18. JDH

If there ever was a deal breaker for me with trusting a meteorological instrument it’s been this storm with the nullschool.
With what it’s showing at the surface and midlevels it would have to equate to actual swell arriving by now. The only other guess that I can come up with is the east winds are pulling it Longshore and bypassing us but if you look the south/southwest winds are just below us so I don’t really know. I know there’s an underlying wave out there but actual swell is not showing. I’m at a loss…

  19. evy alland

Guess we are all on standby – Fuggin wondering if your sandbar is my sandbar – was work grounded yesterday, hope to get a look see today….any ones input on flooding? RE con plane seems to be “down” Micah any “gut” feelings on the path? It looked like she was leaning a bit more west this morning

    1. admin Post author

you guys are ok Evy it will go north, just another few billion dollars worth of sand chewed into the gulf from SW flow

Evy what’s the latest with the condo on Siesta you were fighting? wondering what happened…

just got back from dropping the kids at school and checking Pools, i was hoping to surf. Its knee high Gaston swell with the trades on it already, going back to bed 🙁

if I was on the gulf today I would be back at PAG hahaha, such a cool little wave

  20. Jack

Guys, SPREAD OUT today. I made the mistake of going to n jetty and it was crowded and mushy. Then I went to a sandbar break nearby and got some of the best small waves I’ve ever had three gulf.

  21. Fuggin

Chest – head high in srq this am. Storm tide was making it break on the mid to inside and dumping with moderate sideshore wind. Stuck at work again. Evy- maybe, hint its on the small ilsa in town and nobody surfs it unless there’s a southy gswell. Hope everyone stays safe with the lighting going off here now.

  22. JDH

I was at NJ around 9-10:30 and I can second Rich. It was head maybe a bit more but workable from the mid to inside with a perfect section for that inside schwack!
Went to Lido after that and sad to say the erosion there was super bad. The surf during and after the deluge came in was over head and powerful in between the jetty and the point. Many went running in, not me.
    I’m throughly worked!!!
Hate to see what the next couple high tides are going to do. Hope yall had fun.

  23. evy alland

yes!! Fuggin — my fav. spot – sooo stuck inside today, and now lightening -grrrr – no escapes tomorrow either BLARG – eye balling Friday – maybe Hermine will sit and spin ( remembering stories of Hurrricane Juan) and there will be enough leftovers Saturday.

  24. RUSS-D

I got so fun at Sunset tonight. I found a fun peak, and it was throwing some nice , chest high, lines down the beach. Surfed till dark, and it seemed to be getting a little better, but the light was gone. Wondering what tomorrow might bring us???

  25. Rob Hyypio

It’s really, really good out back right now. Solid swell and at the time of me typing this favorable wind and clean conditions. Chest high and good form. HOWEVER … tons of squall lines coming in as I type this (just off shore)

  26. RUSS-D

worked forced me to miss the clean conditions this morning. It looked really fun too. Looks terrible out there, on the cams, now. Sitting tonight out, unless I see improvement on the cams.

  27. JDH

Maaaaan I wish I was up at my nowhere to park spot in North Pine tonight! Killing me!!!!!
    Anybody go out this evening?

  28. RUSS-D

JDH, I saw that the winds were offshore, up were you are alluding to, but I didn’t have time to get up there. I bet it was SUPER fun up there.

  29. Rob Hyypio

Visual from out back at 7 am this morning: chest to head high chunky disorganized surf. Not quite VAS – but definitely still a wave to be found … with some remaining groundswell that is choppy because of strong onshore wind.

  30. JDH

You know what I’m talkin bout Russ!
Winds remained offshore till dark with long clean lines coming in that threw big open barrels!
Was stuck down in Manasota which was decent but knowing where it’s really going off closer to where I used to live was tough. Too bad you couldn’t of gotten out in the am. It’s just been great to get waves. There’s another boat only spot north of that that holds strong south southwest swells like this.
I’m going to give it a look tonight down here in Manasota at stump pass. I’ve never surfed down here other than in the winter. It’s a bit of a new HC adventure for me.

  31. Tanner

JDH, I thought about that same North spot on Wednesday. I haven’t surfed there since the 2005 season. I couldn’t get out to check due to work.

  32. JDH

It’s really a good break on the right conditions. Once the swell starts bending more southwest it picks up more of the full length of it without sectioning off. What has me baffled is how it remained offshore during this run of waves.
The Gulf seems to just love to keep us guessing.
I don’t think anyone can claim to have mastered it. I surely cant.
Oh and by the way, just to clarify that boat only spot further north. The sand and shoals up there are always quickly on the move so I can’t claim that it would actually have been working but it really does, just a gamble going out there when somewhere south is more reliable…
No pm session for me tonight. Going to bring the kids tomorrow morning for some leftover grom stoke.

    1. admin Post author

JDH 99L eventually became Hermine. It was an open wave for so long then on day 2 in the gulf it finally got it’s act together and wrapped up. That’s why the wind went offshore. It caught all of us with a nice surprise. Typically well formed tropical storms and hurricane will keep the wind offshore whereas extra tropical storms in the eastern gulf will make the winds hard south, no offshores. So stoked you guys got good surf.

  33. Rob Hyypio

I have been out here since 7:30 am and there’s still a knee to thigh high wave coming through in So Pinetown. Bring a LB out and you’ll get some waves. As for rating this storm, I wasn’t able to surf because I am facing shoulder surgery and had work commitments, but from the pictures and feedback of all my friends – it seems like this swell was one for the ages. Just like we still talk about the 2005 ‘Cane season, this swell appears to be as good as any one of those storms (maybe with the exception of Katrina) …

  34. JDH

Still wait high sets coming through at blind pass. Got some juice left in it too. I left at 2:30. Tides going out so I’m pretty sure so will the waves.
True True Micah. I bet looking at the pics of Sunset going off must’ve made you a little home sick.
I don’t know when the last time I’ve seen it like that.
    YOWZA!

  35. RUSS-D

Gustov was the best swell i have ever seen at Sunset. So clean and perfect. Hermine was fun(on the days i surfed), but I missed the Thursday morning sessions, and that was supposed to be the good goods. Wed. night was the best I have seen Sunset in a long time though, and I can imagine Thurs. morning was fire. Hoping for a few more like this one soon.
