Monday WFL Weekly Outlook: Sorry guys the high pressure most likely will not let this well organized wave move north into the window of surf. He may get a name in the Bay of Campeche but the circulation, the distance don't add up to anything. Bad news... small consolation but the inlets on the EC should have fun surf tomorrow and Wednesday in the 2-3ft range with offshore winds. At least the tropics are not dead just pointed in the wrong direction at the moment. A little Caribe action below and I do mean little.

Can you believe how fast it went from elongated trough to potent whirling dervish? Still not that much damage and lots of beneficial rain for the gulf coast and all the way up to New England. She went just as planned... Really going back we've seen the same scenario about every couple years at least. First week in June, coming up through the channel bringing rain and wind. Hopefully the season keeps cranking with some solid waves every month.
Friday 6/7 9am WFL Surf Report and Forecast: Knee to waist down in SRQ. Chest high at the best spots, knee high range in Pinellas, fading wave heights today. It looks flat after today so get on it. Congrats to the GC for starting off Hurricane Season the right way with fun waves from Andrea while the Atlantic stayed mostly quiet. How did you do? How do you rate the Andrea event? Tell us in the comments. Looking ahead: The only shot barely worth mentioning is weak troughing a week (weak) out that could put the gulf back with onshore flow and knee to thigh high waves next Friday 6/14. But that is way out and I suspect the trough will be too weak to kick the waves up. Something to keep an eye on. Have a good weekend.

Thursday 8am UPDATER: She got a name but the surf is not chunky... yet. Look for building surf today. It's on the way by later in the day the waves should be head high and chunky but with wind and storms. This morning it looks waist high, bigger at the best south swell spots. There is a big difference in surf conditions from county to county with Pinellas seeing minimal wave activity this morning. Surf is better in SRQ and Manatee. Watch out for strong storms. Pinellas will fill in later today and N County could go off late if the wind stays SSE.
Tomorrow Andrea will be up the coast, waist to chest leftovers at best spots, fading hard during the day. Saturday looks knee high at this point. For the latest reports and surf stories, post up in the comments. How did you do?

Epic summer.

My first summer surfing the gulf full- on was 1985. We had a storm every month that summer. It was going off. My mistake was thinking that every summer would be like that. It was more like once in every 10 years. Because 95 and 2005 were amazing seasons also for surf that is (and total destruction of select locations). After that summer, the following year 1986, we had maybe two storms which gave us surf. That was for the whole summer. 1986 was hot and flat. For the one day of tiny surf we had I skipped my driving class in summer school and ended up failing, just like Spongebob and Mrs Puff. The rest of the time I spent skateboarding and doing lawn service in the sweltering 96 degree heat. Man, that summer was as bad as 85 was good. Here we are 2013, whats gonna happen?

Friday WFL Update: Forecast below looks to stick. If anything, knee to waist is conservative as the whole gulf heads this way for Sunday and Monday. It probably won't happen but keep an eye on the wind to die early Sunday or behind some storms, maybe a slight glass-off at some point. Enjoy your day...

Thursday 5/2 6am WFL Weekend Outlook: Waves on the way. Look for west wind-swell starting Sunday and lasting through the beginning of next week. Sunday looks knee to waist high with 15knt NW winds, slight chance for cooperating wind and waves early Sunday am. Get up early and check the signs and if the wind is dead. A stalled low pressure over Tennessee will pulse Sunday night and send another round of waist high WNW wind-swell for Monday am, maybe plus at best spots. Tuesday knee to thigh as the low moves away and the gradient relaxes. That's the way it looks right now. Stay tuned... Trying to get the comments going for the upcoming surf event.

Caribe: Sean, Pete and crew are on the program, surfing multiple sessions in really good waves every day. Keeping the partying to a minimum and maximizing their time in the water. See if they can last the whole trip with out getting surfed-out. We got up really early this am and went searching. The swell was smaller inside and initially we may have been slightly disappointed but sure enough it pulsed when the tide filled in and got super fun(see the pics above). We surfed our brains out till lunch time and then the crowds showed up and the wind got on it and it rained... Cool to score it early...

Saturday Update: Looking at the buoys this am, 42036 is not so impressive but 99 and 003 show a lot more solid NW swell. 6ft at 8seconds is way better than 6ft at barely 6 seconds. 8 seconds is the beginning of a swell, 6 seconds is chop. Any ways at the beach the winds are gusty near 20 from the north. Checking out 4 of the most reliable gulf coast beach cams at dawn, Venice looks flat whereas a small glassy swell was spotted in Manatee Cnty and CLW looks knee high or less. From what I see on the wave models the NW swell in the gulf is kinda skecth. Be careful where you search today if you find a wave. Based on Venice looking lake flat I would say the NW swell on the lower buoys is not making it in. Maybe in a couple hours but keep your expectations low, hope it's not a skunk. For what its worth N County looks a little more solid than it was at first light. Go to the Compound tonight!

Friday Update 4/19 6am: A front will work its way into FL on Saturday bringing rain and wind. Late in the day today best south facing beaches could have a knee to thigh high windswell. Buoy is currently 2ft from the SSW which usually translates to a 1ft south line on the beach. So the sea state in the eastern gulf needs to build a bit and that is forecast to happen later this afternoon. Not a lock but worth a look at the cams for a late Friday surf. Saturday the front comes through with rain. Look for building NW waves on Saturday in the thigh high range at best c-front spots. Winds will clock N then NE. There is a chance for small but fun surf on Saturday with clean conditions. Best spots could see waist high sets. Looks to be a fat tide all day on Saturday. A minor low tide is at 1pm with another high at 6pm. Tide should not be a deterrent. Synopsis: This system is not a dud. It has to offer a chance to get wet at some point with small waves on tap. If a little more NW swell sneaks in from under the panhandle and the winds go offshore Saturday could be fun at some point. Great way to spend the day and then go check out the Compound's anniversary event Saturday night.

Sunday 4/7 Weekly Outlook 8am: Looks like an extended run of south winds coming. Definitely like the pattern. It will take awhile to develop but south facing beaches could have fun spring time south wind swell for days. SE winds start on Monday and slowly clock and increase. Maybe Wednesday but more likely Thursday the south line will get big enough to ride. Look for knee to thigh high plus south windswell starting Thursday at best south facing beaches and going through Saturday. Friday looks the biggest and Saturday may glass off. Love spring time south swells, put the wetsuits away and enjoy some fun surf.

Saturday 3/30 8am: Still looking for low pressure in the gulf mid to late next week. Blogger: Yesterday was about the coldest day of the year here in PR. It was super windy and rainy all day as the cold front you guys had last Monday slid through the islands con fuerza. Maria's looked like Florida during a cold front. I went to work. About 11 am my friend Blake calls me and tells me a semi secret spot in south Rincón has fun surf. So I break from work and head down there to find waist to chest high super fun lined up rights along a reef breaking really close to shore. Were out there surfing with White Justin, just the 3 of us and these two manatees start to circle us. This was one of the craziest things I've ever seen in the ocean. The locals were harassing us and would not leave us alone. This 7' manatee thought he was Jaws and came up behind White Justin and about sat on his board. It was hilarious we dove off our boards and started swimming with them. They were not scared of us at all and seemed super curious. They would not go away. We surfed for two hours and they were there the whole time swimming back and forth around us coming up right next to us. At one point I took off on a wave and had to straighten out not to t-bone a manatee. It was insane. A surprise fun surf on a rainy, cold Friday in the Caribbean with a bunch of promiscuous Puerto Rican manatees, too funny. One difference between these manatees and the ones Ive seen in Florida: No prop scars.

Thursday 3/28 7am Weekend Outlook: Chilly this morning but it will warm up this weekend. After a nice run of surf its going to stay calm for a week but at the end of next week Low pressure is forecast to be in the area. Hopefully this next system will be a wave maker for WFL. Right now it looks like low pressure in the gulf late next week. Stay tuned. EC will have chest high surf on Friday with N winds, be safe if you drive over. Have a great weekend!

Saturday 7am: Latest runs show a full-on front coming through Tuesday. I think the storm in the Atlantic acts like a vacuum and pulls the gulf front through for Tuesday. So that's your next chance to surf. Waist high range in the afternoon Tuesday. Have a great day, more details later.

Friday 6am 3/8/13 Weekend Outlook: After some fun waves a break in the action until Tuesday. This weekend will be pretty calm. Next week we see that same battle ground out in the middle gulf as the jet pulls back and does not let the next low bomb through. I think we could see some fun surf next week. I think the low will stall in the middle gulf maybe under the panhandle on Monday night and send a small swell for Tuesday. Right now it looks ridable on Tuesday afternoon in the 1-2ft range. This has the potential to go either way so stay tuned. EC also looks good by Tuesday next week so keep an eye on it.

Monday 6am Weekly Outlook: Massive low pressure will fester over the Tennessee Valley and slowly move NW. The whole gulf will be swept with S then SW, then W and eventually NW winds all this week. Lots of waves on the way. Here's the way it shakes down: Today is that same south swell you had all weekend. Nice little south line. Lots of guys got LB waves this past weekend. Monday That should be around today and S facers could get fun, esp late. There is some fetch down towards Cuba. Tuesday looks chunky with storms possible. SW windswell tomorrow, lots of onshore wind and waist to chest high surf. Wednesday looks waist to chest with much lighter winds. Not offshore glass but light onshore and solid swell underneath surface chop. Dieing down into Thursday: Knee high leftovers. Friday a small NW starts to trickle in late. Knee high at N County and c-front spots, maybe thigh late. Saturday and Sunday look like building waist to chest high cold front surf all weekend with gusty NW winds. Winter kicks in. Lots of wave around all week. Wednesday looks the most solid and Thursday looks the weakest. This stuff can change quick as the pattern is unreliable. Safe to say though it set-up to have lots of surf this week, enjoy. Post up in the comments! How's the red tide in SRQ? reports of a return, boooooooo.
